《Startide Rising》摘要

"Startide Rising" by David Brin is a science fiction novel published in 1983, recognized for its innovative exploration of themes such as evolutionary biology, intelligence, and the nature of communication. Set in the distant future, the story unfolds primarily aboard the starship Streaker as it navigates the complexities of interstellar politics and biology. The ship's crew is composed of intelligent dolphins and their human companions, who are on the run after making a groundbreaking discovery about an ancient alien race. The narrative is rich with the distinctive framework of Brin’s Uplift Universe, where species can advance their intelligence through careful manipulation and training by a more advanced species. This setting raises questions about the ethical implications of intelligence augmentation and the responsibilities that come with it. The primary protagonists include Captain Jijo, a human who commands the ship, and a group of dolphins with varying abilities and personalities, each contributing unique perspectives to the unfolding conflicts. As the crew of Streaker races to evade capture by pursuing alien factions trying to control the ramifications of their discovery, the novel delves into complex themes of survival, loyalty, and the quest for knowledge. Brin skillfully weaves a narrative that examines the essence of sentience and the inherent dangers of exploration in the cosmos. The book's structure provides a multi-layered viewpoint, alternating between the perspectives of the dolphins and humans, presenting a rich tapestry of interspecies dynamics and the struggle against formidable foes. "Startide Rising" stands out not only for its imaginative world-building but also for its insightful commentary on the potential and responsibilities of intelligence in the universe.
