"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by Caitlin Doughty is a candid memoir that explores the author’s journey through the world of death and the funeral industry. Doughty, who becomes a funeral director, recounts her experiences starting with her job at Westwind Cremation and Burial, where she grapples with the everyday complexities of death, the rituals surrounding it, and society's often awkward relationship with mortality. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of her early fascination with death, stemming from her childhood and a transformative trip to Mongolia where she witnessed traditional sky burial practices. The book is structured around Doughty's unique experiences in the death industry, weaving personal anecdotes with broader reflections on cultural attitudes toward death. In various chapters, she highlights significant topics, such as the history of cremation, the corporate nature of modern funerals, and the often sanitized portrayal of death in contemporary society. Doughty also challenges readers to rethink their perspectives on dying, arguing for a more open and honest conversation about mortality. Throughout the memoir, Doughty's wit and candor shine, making her explorations both engaging and enlightening. Her experiences are not merely anecdotal; they serve to illuminate the emotional and philosophical underpinnings of how individuals and culture perceive death.
