Resumen de Sleepers

"Sleepers," written by Lorenzo Carcaterra, is a poignant novel that intricately weaves together themes of friendship, trauma, and revenge. Set primarily in New York City, the narrative unfolds in the 1960s and traces the lives of four boys—Carcaterra’s protagonists: Lorenzo, Michael, John, and Tommy. These childhood friends, who grow up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, experience a pivotal trauma when a prank goes horribly wrong, leading them to renditions in a juvenile correctional facility. The story is structured in a nonlinear fashion, alternating between their innocent beginnings, the harrowing events they endure in the institution, and the long-lasting effects those experiences have on their adult lives. The chapters delve into the backgrounds of each character, emphasizing their bond as they navigate adolescence and the harsh realities of their environment. The narrative captures the innocence of youth contrasted with the brutalities they face, with the juvenile system depicted as a place where vulnerabilities are exploited, not protected. Throughout the novel, Carcaterra explores themes of survival, justice, and the impact of trauma. He also invokes the notion of retribution as the boys grow into men grappling with the scars of their past. The title "Sleepers" metaphorically reflects how the characters suppress their traumas—only to awaken them later, leading to morally complex decisions that challenge their identities and friendships. The captivating storyline not only paints a vivid picture of a bygone era but also raises profound questions about justice and the consequences of revenge, making it a gripping and emotionally charged read.
