"Slammed" by Colleen Hoover centers around the life of 18-year-old Layken Cohen, who moves to a new town after the death of her father. The story unfolds in Michigan, a setting that serves as a backdrop for Layken's emotional journey and personal growth. She meets her neighbor, Will Cooper, a charismatic and talented teacher who introduces her to the world of slam poetry. The novel's title refers not only to the poetry form but also to the obstacles and emotional challenges Layken faces. The narrative is imbued with the themes of love, loss, and resilience, as both Layken and Will grapple with their past experiences that shape their relationship. Their connection deepens over their mutual passion for poetry, which acts as a therapeutic outlet for their pain. Through spoken word, the characters express their feelings, fears, and hopes, making poetry a crucial framework of the story. Colleen Hoover employs a dual narrative structure that alternates between Layken's perspective and the poetry that reveals her innermost thoughts. This approach adds depth to the characters and enhances the reader's understanding of their emotional states. Additionally, the novel explores the concept of choices and their consequences, highlighting how decisions impact the lives of individuals and those around them. As Layken navigates her tumultuous feelings for Will, she also faces familial responsibilities and the complexities of young adulthood. The emotional stakes rise as they encounter external challenges that threaten to keep them apart, forcing both protagonists to confront their vulnerabilities. "Slammed" ultimately combines raw, heartfelt storytelling with the transformative power of art, making it a poignant exploration of love in the face of adversity.
