Résumé de Rizal without the overcoat

"Rizal Without the Overcoat" by Ambeth R. Ocampo presents a fresh and engaging perspective on the life of Philippine national hero José Rizal. Through his concise and accessible writing, Ocampo strips away the hero's mythic layers, seeking to humanize Rizal and illuminate his complexities. The book is structured around various themes and ideas that challenge traditional narratives surrounding Rizal’s contributions to Philippine society and history. One distinctive framework employed by Ocampo is his analysis of Rizal’s life through three central lenses: his writings, his political engagement, and his personal relationships. Each chapter delves into different aspects of Rizal's experiences, such as his education in Europe, his deepening nationalist sentiments, and his connections with contemporaries like Andres Bonifacio and other reformists. Ocampo also highlights Rizal's intellectual pursuits, particularly his novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," exploring how these works were not only literary achievements but also powerful tools for social reform. The setting of the book shifts between the 19th-century Philippines and Europe, contrasting Rizal's evolving identity amid colonial oppression and the Reformation in Europe. By engaging with Rizal's letters, writings, and historical context, Ocampo challenges readers to reconsider Rizal's legacy. He also introduces lesser-known anecdotes and observations, allowing readers to appreciate not only Rizal’s monumental role in Philippine history but also his personal struggles, aspirations, and imperfections. "Rizal Without the Overcoat" ultimately serves as a vital exploration of a multifaceted figure, presenting José Rizal not merely as a national icon but as a relatable individual whose life was marked by both exceptional courage and profound vulnerability.
