Саммари «Reviving Ophelia»

In Reviving Ophelia, psychologist Mary Pipher argues that adolescent girls in America are like Shakespeare’s Ophelia: joyful and assertive in childhood, then silenced and fragmented by adolescence. Drawing on decades of clinical practice in Lincoln, Nebraska, Pipher describes how girls between roughly eleven and twenty lose their “true selves” as they enter a culture that pressures them to be pretty, passive, and pleasing. The book is built around case studies from her therapy practice rather than abstract theory, introducing readers to girls given pseudonyms like Lisa, Charlotte, and Elena, whose struggles illustrate her central framework: the “girl-poisoning culture” that shapes them. Pipher identifies several interlocking forces. She describes the “androgynous” freedom of preadolescent girls, who climb trees and speak their minds, and contrasts it with the “female impersonator” phase of adolescence, when girls learn to perform femininity and split their public and private selves. She examines how media, peer pressure, and schools reward girls for appearance over achievement, and she traces consequences including depression, eating disorders, self-cutting, substance use, and sexual violence. Chapters address divorce and blended families, mothers and daughters, fathers, sexuality, and the particular pressures on girls who are gifted, depressed, or struggling with drugs. Pipher also critiques a society she sees as hostile to girls’ development and offers suggestions for parents, teachers, and therapists, such as staying connected, listening without judgment, and advocating for girls’ interests. First published in 1994, the book spent years on bestseller lists and became a touchstone in parenting and psychology discussions of adolescence. Its title evokes the drowned Ophelia of Hamlet, whom Pipher sees as a symbol of girls whose voices and selves are lost, and her aim is to help them be “revived” rather than diminished.
