"Recipes for a Small Planet" by Ellen Buchman Ewald is a pioneering cookbook that intertwines culinary art with social consciousness, emphasizing vegetarianism as a solution to global food issues. Published in 1972 during a time of rising environmental awareness, Ewald's work advocates for a plant-based diet as a means to promote sustainable living and reduce environmental impact. The book presents a unique framework that not only covers a diverse range of recipes but also engages readers in a broader conversation about the interconnections between food choices, ecological balance, and social justice. The chapters are grouped thematically, focusing on various culinary perspectives, such as grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, each encouraging creativity and resourcefulness in the kitchen. Ewald introduces readers to the concept of "meals for the planet," where she advocates for wholesome, nutritious ingredients that have minimal environmental footprints. She argues that adopting a vegetarian lifestyle is not just a dietary choice but a social responsibility that can lead to positive change in global food systems. Ewald emphasizes the importance of community and shared meals, promoting the idea that food can serve as a medium to foster connection and understanding among people. The recipes are often accompanied by tips on how to source ingredients sustainably and ideas for reducing food waste.
