《Raising Steam》摘要

"Raising Steam" is a novel by Terry Pratchett that continues the story of the Discworld, a flat, disc-shaped world supported by four elephants standing on the back of Great A'Tuin, the cosmic turtle. In this installment, Pratchett explores the advent of the steam engine, a revolutionary invention that symbolizes technological advancement and the clash between tradition and progress. The narrative follows the enigmatic character of Moist von Lipwig, a con artist turned bureaucrat who is tasked with overseeing the establishment of the new railway system, which aims to unite the disparate regions of the Discworld. Set against the backdrop of Ankh-Morpork, the bustling capital city, "Raising Steam" introduces an array of colorful characters, including the hapless yet endearing railway engineer, Mr. Pump, and the irritable dwarf, who represents the ancient ways of craftsmanship. As von Lipwig works to bring the railways to life, he must navigate various challenges: public skepticism, the threat of sabotage from those resistant to change, and the deeply entrenched politics of different societal factions. Through hexes and humor, Pratchett delves into themes of innovation, the impact of technology on society, and the fear of the unknown. The key conflict arises when the establishment of the railway threatens traditional forms of transportation and commerce, igniting a battle between progress and the old ways. The introduction of steam-powered travel also brings forth existential questions about the role of change in a rapidly evolving world. Ultimately, "Raising Steam" represents a narrative that is simultaneously whimsical and insightful, offering a unique commentary on the relationship between humanity and its inventions.
