Resumen de Pretties

"Pretties," a novel by Scott Westerfeld, serves as the second installment in the "Uglies" series, expanding upon the dystopian world where societal beauty standards dictate lives. Set in a future society where all adolescents undergo surgical enhancements to become "Pretties," the story delves into themes of identity, conformity, and rebellion. The protagonist, Tally Youngblood, has transitioned from the "Uglies" stage to the glamorous yet hollow world of the Pretties, characterized by their superficial beauty and carefree existence. As Tally navigates the life of a Pretty, she grapples with the disorientation of her new identity and the drug-induced euphoria that dulls critical thinking—a product of society's control over individuals. The distinctive framework of "Pretties" revolves around the contrast between superficial beauty and authentic self-awareness, exploring how social pressures can skew personal values and relationships. Tally's journey introduces readers to the challenges faced by those who begin to question the status quo. Throughout the novel, Tally encounters experiments related to the effects of beauty on the mind and behavior, prompting her to reconsider what it means to be truly free. Significant characters, including her old friend Peris, illustrate the varying degrees of compliance and resistance within this structured society. As Tally's memories of her previous life, including friendships with other non-Pretties, resurface, she becomes increasingly aware of the insidious nature of the societal norms that dictate her new existence. With a richly developed setting and profound ethical dilemmas, "Pretties" ultimately challenges its readers to reflect on the implications of valuing surface appearances over genuine personal growth and individuality.
