Саммари «Presumed Innocent»

Scott Turow’s 1987 debut novel *Presumed Innocent* is a legal thriller set in Kindle County, a fictional Midwestern jurisdiction closely modeled on Chicago. The protagonist, Rusty Sabich, is the chief deputy prosecuting attorney in the Kindle County Prosecutor’s Office, a veteran lawyer whose professional life unravels when his colleague and former lover, Carolyn Polhemus, is found murdered in her apartment. The novel’s distinctive framework is its meticulous procedural realism, drawn from Turow’s own experience as an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago. The narrative follows Sabich not as an investigator but as a suspect: he is assigned by his boss, District Attorney Raymond Horgan, to lead the investigation into Carolyn’s death, even as evidence begins to accumulate against him. This dual role—prosecutor and potential defendant—creates the central tension. Turow builds the story around the machinery of a criminal trial: grand jury proceedings, forensic evidence, political maneuvering within the D.A.’s office during an election campaign, and the slow, grinding work of building a case. The courtroom scenes are exacting, reflecting the author’s background rather than cinematic shorthand. Key characters include Horgan, who is fighting a reelection battle against challenger Nico Della Guardia; Tommy Molto, a rival prosecutor who becomes Sabich’s adversary; and Sandy Stern, the defense attorney who represents Sabich at trial. The novel’s structure alternates between Sabich’s first-person narration of the present and flashbacks to his affair with Carolyn, gradually revealing his unreliable perspective. The murder investigation, the political stakes, and the personal betrayal converge in a trial that turns on forensic details and witness credibility. *Presumed Innocent* is widely credited with establishing the modern legal thriller as a genre, predating and influencing works by John Grisham and others. Its central question—whether Sabich killed Carolyn—drives the plot to a famous, deliberately ambiguous resolution. The book spent months on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a 1990 film starring Harrison Ford.
