《Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less》摘要

"Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" by Jeffrey Archer is a clever heist novel that revolves around the themes of revenge and justice, set in the stratified society of England. The story follows four diverse protagonists who each bear a personal grievance against a swindler named Adam Hall, who has duped them out of their hard-earned money. The four characters—an aristocrat, a businessman, a painter, and a scientist—form an unlikely alliance to reclaim not just their stolen fortunes but also their dignity. Archer constructs the narrative using a traditional episodic structure, divided into four parts that correspond to each character’s personal backstory and motivations. This framework allows readers to grasp the distinct personal stakes involved, highlighting how each character's expertise plays a crucial role in the elaborate plan to defraud Hall in return. The settings transition from the refined spaces of upper-class England to the more sinister underbelly of deception, illustrating the contrast in lifestyles and morals. The plot unfolds through meticulous planning, showcasing the strategic elements of con artistry, as the protagonists engage in a series of adventures that test their cunning and collaboration. Archer employs rich character development to attract readers into the intricate emotional and psychological layers of his characters, making their quest for justice both compelling and relatable. "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" ultimately becomes a story of camaraderie and cleverness, entwined with a moral exploration of the consequences of greed and the pursuit of retribution.
