Resumen de Night Watch

Terry Pratchett’s *Night Watch* is a pivotal novel in his acclaimed Discworld series, offering a deep exploration into the past of Ankh-Morpork and the formative experiences of its most iconic law enforcer, Commander Sam Vimes. The narrative opens with Vimes being hurled back in time, specifically to the tumultuous period on the eve of the Glorious Revolution—an event later re-framed as the counter-revolution of the 25th of May—that profoundly shaped both the city and his own character. Stranded in a past where his younger self is a fresh recruit and his original mentor, Sergeant John Keel, is destined to die, Vimes assumes Keel's identity. Under this guise, he navigates the volatile streets of Ankh-Morpork, which are alight with political unrest, barricades, and revolutionary fervour. The book specifically explores the concept of the "Sum of the Parts," where individual acts, intentions, and even small choices cumulatively forge historical outcomes and shape societal memory. Vimes finds himself mentoring his younger, more naive self, and a cohort of new Watch recruits, imparting the principles of true policing amidst the chaos and the power struggles between the entrenched Patrician and emerging revolutionary "Regulators." Pratchett uses this temporal displacement to dissect Vimes’s philosophy on law, order, and what it truly means to be a "good copper," regardless of the government in power. The novel delves into the complex nature of history and how it is written, questioning the authenticity of heroes and villains alike. Vimes grapples with his own internal "Beast" — his deep-seated rage against injustice — as he tries to steer events towards a future he recognizes, without directly interfering with the "known" history. *Night Watch* is a profound meditation on the cyclical nature of societal conflict, the difficult moral choices individuals face in revolutionary times, and the enduring human struggle for justice against a backdrop of both political expediency and genuine idealism, all filtered through Vimes’s cynical yet deeply moral worldview.
