The story is characterized by its unique storytelling approach, with chapters that are interspersed with footnotes offering additional insights, lore, and context to the world and events unfolding. This distinctive framework enhances the reader's immersion in the dark and brutal atmosphere of the book, as well as its richly developed setting known as the Republic of Itreya. Mia’s journey is marked by her encounters with various characters, including her companions, the enigmatic gods, and other members of the Red Church. Each chapter often focuses on her training and grapples with themes of vengeance, identity, and the moral complexities of her path.
