Résumé de My Friend Dahmer

"My Friend Dahmer" is a graphic memoir by Derf Backderf that explores the teenage years of notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, providing a unique perspective on his early life and the social context that contributed to his later crimes. Set in the late 1970s in Bath, Ohio, Backderf recounts his experiences as a high school classmate of Dahmer, leading the reader through a mix of poignant observations, dark humor, and a genuine sense of empathy for both Dahmer and the struggles he faced. The narrative framework of the book is structured around key experiences and episodes shared by Dahmer and the author, highlighting the complexities of adolescence, mental illness, and the societal factors that shrouded Dahmer during his formative years. Backderf presents Dahmer as an outsider, someone who grappled with his burgeoning identity and inner demons, illustrated through chapters that detail the awkwardness of high school life, the pressures of growing up, and Dahmer's increasing isolation. Through various stylized illustrations and personal anecdotes, Backderf captures the disconnect between Dahmer's disturbing behaviors—such as collecting roadkill and exhibiting antisocial tendencies—and his interactions with peers who were oblivious to the darkness that would later define him. The book raises poignant questions about the responsibility of those who witness troubling behavior and ultimately emphasizes the need for understanding and compassion, even for individuals whose futures are marked by evil. "My Friend Dahmer" serves not only as a chilling portrait of a future criminal but also as a meditation on friendship, the impact of unnoticed distress signals, and the consequences of societal neglect.
