『Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh』要約

"Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH," a novel by Robert C. O'Brien, follows the story of Mrs. Frisby, a field mouse living in a cinderblock home on a farm. The narrative takes place primarily in the American countryside, where the effects of agriculture and human interference impact the lives of small animals like Mrs. Frisby and her family. Faced with a dire situation, Mrs. Frisby must protect her ailing son, Timothy, from the threat of the farmer's plowing, which endangers their home in the garden. The book weaves together themes of courage, sacrifice, and the importance of intelligence and cooperation. Central to the plot is the underlying backstory of the rats, who are not ordinary rodents but have undergone a series of scientific experiments at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). These experiments grant them enhanced intelligence and abilities. Through the eyes of Mrs. Frisby, readers discover the story of these extraordinary rats, including the leader, Nicodemus, who plays a crucial role in their survival. As Mrs. Frisby navigates the challenges posed by both the natural world and human encroachment, she interacts with a cast of characters that includes not only the intelligent rats but also other animals, each illustrating different aspects of life in the wild. Together, these elements create a rich tapestry of adventure and moral questions about ethics and the coexistence of species, elevating the narrative beyond a simple tale of a mouse's struggle. O'Brien's exploration of intelligence versus instinct and the resultant societal implications resonates throughout the story, making "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" a thoughtful and engaging read.
