《Monstress, Vol. 2》摘要

"Monstress, Vol. 2" by Marjorie M. Liu continues the intricate and richly crafted narrative established in the first volume of this dark fantasy series. Set in a steampunk-inspired alternate history, the story unfolds in a world ravaged by war and steeped in magic, where humans and powerful, sentient creatures known as Arcanics coexist in a fragile truce. The protagonist, Maika Halfwolf, is a young woman on a quest to understand her mysterious connection to powerful forces and to uncover the secrets of her past. In this volume, Maika grapples with the relationship between horror and humanity as she delves deeper into the tragic history of her world. The narrative showcases her struggle against the oppressive forces of the ruling class, including the Cumaea, a group of sorceresses who wield significant power. Liu's exploration of themes such as identity, trauma, and the implications of using one’s power to survive become central to Maika's journey. Distinctive frameworks throughout the volume include the examination of memory as a tool for both empowerment and oppression, represented through Maika's link to a powerful monster that resides within her. The artwork, illustrated by Sana Takeda, compels with its detailed, lush images that reflect the brutality and beauty of the world. As the story progresses, Maika's encounters with both allies and enemies reveal the complex interplay of loyalty and betrayal. "Monstress, Vol. 2" deepens the lore of its universe, while presenting readers with a gripping tale of vengeance, survival, and the search for self amidst the chaos of war.
