『Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children』要約

Ransom Riggs's *Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children* is a unique young adult novel that masterfully interweaves a fantastical narrative with a curated collection of unsettling vintage photographs, forming a distinctive framework for its story. The book introduces Jacob Portman, a seemingly ordinary Florida teenager whose life is upended by the mysterious death of his beloved grandfather, Abe, who had long regaled him with incredible tales of a remote orphanage populated by children with unusual abilities. After witnessing his grandfather's final, horrific moments, Jacob begins to experience disturbing nightmares and visions, leading his therapist to suggest a trip to the desolate Welsh island of Cairnholm, where Abe claimed to have lived as a boy. Jacob's journey to the ruins of Miss Peregrine's children's home leads him into a world far stranger than any of his grandfather's stories. He discovers that the peculiar children, along with their protector, Miss Peregrine—an Ymbryne capable of transforming into a bird and manipulating time—exist within a temporal anomaly known as a "peculiar loop." This loop continuously replays a single day in 1940, shielding them from external threats and preserving their unusual abilities. The vintage photographs integrated throughout the text are presented as genuine artifacts, adding a layer of uncanny realism to the fantastical elements, depicting the children's bizarre peculiarities, such as an invisible boy, a girl who can levitate, and another with immense strength. As Jacob becomes immersed in this hidden world, he learns of the dangers that plague the peculiars: unseen monsters known as Hollowgasts, and the more insidious Wights—peculiars corrupted by a failed attempt at immortality. The novel skillfully balances elements of mystery, adventure, and the coming-of-age journey, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and confronting the extraordinary. Jacob must quickly reconcile his mundane reality with the fantastical history of his family and the perilous present of his new peculiar companions, all while attempting to understand the true legacy of his grandfather.
