《Marked》摘要

P. C. Cast’s novel *Marked* introduces readers to the world of vampyres through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird, the protagonist of the *House of Night* series. The narrative begins when Zoey is "Marked" by a vampyre Tracker—a crescent moon tattoo appearing on her forehead—signifying her selection to become a fledgling vampyre. This involuntary transformation compels her to leave her suburban life behind and immediately relocate to the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a specialized institution for those undergoing the change. Within the House of Night, fledglings like Zoey must navigate a rigorous curriculum, learning about vampyre history, traditions, and their spiritual connection to the vampyre goddess Nyx. A distinctive framework of the series is the unpredictable nature of the transition, as not all fledglings survive the process, making their time at the school a matter of life or death. Zoey quickly discovers she is not an ordinary fledgling; her Mark is more intricate than others, and she manifests an unusual affinity for the five elements—earth, air, fire, water, and spirit—a unique gift that sets her apart and hints at a significant destiny. She forms alliances with fellow students, including the eccentric red-haired twins, Erin and Shaunee, and the intellectually gifted Damien. However, she also encounters immediate antagonism from Aphrodite, the school’s powerful and seemingly privileged queen bee and leader of the Dark Daughters. *Marked* establishes the foundational world-building, introducing the social hierarchy, the mystical powers at play, and the initial challenges Zoey faces as she grapples with her new identity and the unfolding mysteries surrounding her exceptional abilities.
