《Lovecraft Country》摘要

"Lovecraft Country" by Matt Ruff intricately weaves together horror and history, reframing H.P. Lovecraft's mythos through the lens of 1950s Jim Crow America. The novel comprises a series of interlinked narratives, each focusing on different characters, primarily Atticus Turner, his friend Letitia, and his uncle George, as they embark on a quest for knowledge and belonging. Set against the backdrop of a pre-civil rights era, the characters confront not only the horrors of racism but also supernatural entities inspired by Lovecraft's oeuvre. Ruff skillfully utilizes diverse chapter structures, each functioning as a standalone story while contributing to the overarching narrative. The chapters range from explorations of racial discrimination to encounters with magic and monstrous beings, highlighting the surreal intersection of systemic oppression and the gothic horror genre. For instance, in one chapter, Atticus faces a family of oppressive white elites who harness dark magic, while in another, Letitia's experiences in a haunted house critique societal expectations of women and race. Ruff also delves into themes of identity and belonging, examining how the characters navigate a world filled with external and internal turmoil. Through the protagonists' encounters with both societal and supernatural threats, the novel challenges the traditionally white-centric narratives of horror and illuminates the real-life horrors of racism. The melding of genres—historical fiction and horror—culminates in a unique exploration of resilience and resistance, making "Lovecraft Country" a compelling commentary on race and the legacy of horror literature.
