Lord of the Flies 요약

"Lord of the Flies," written by William Golding, is a seminal novel exploring the themes of civilization versus savagery, the loss of innocence, and the inherent darkness within human nature. The story is set during an unspecified wartime period, beginning with a group of British boys who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes. Without adult supervision, they initially attempt to establish order, appointing Ralph as their leader, and using a conch shell as a symbol of authority and democratic governance. Throughout the narrative, Golding uses distinct frameworks to illustrate the boys' gradual descent into chaos. Ralph represents order and civilization, while Jack embodies savagery and the allure of power. The group’s initial attempts to create a structured society fail as fear and primal instincts begin to take over, leading to a breakdown of communication and cooperation. The island, which initially offers freedom and adventure, transforms into a nightmarish landscape as the boys’ inner darkness surfaces. Key chapters highlight the evolution of these characters and their conflict, particularly the struggle between Ralph and Jack, alongside the increasingly ominous role of the "beast," a manifestation of their growing fears and savagery. Simon, another significant character, represents innate goodness and insight, further complicating the moral landscape of the group. Golding's novel serves as a powerful allegory, prompting readers to consider the fragility of civilization and the thin veneer that separates humanity from barbarism. Ultimately, "Lord of the Flies" stands as a profound commentary on human nature, challenging the notion of inherent goodness and examining the societal constructs that curb primal instincts.
