《Kushiel's chosen》摘要

"Kushiel's Chosen," the second book in Jacqueline Carey's acclaimed Phedre's Trilogy, continues the story of Phedre nó Delaunay, a protagonist marked by her unique fate and the enduring legacy of house Kushiel. Set in the richly imagined land of Terre d'Ange, which draws inspiration from medieval Europe, the novel explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the intricacies of power dynamics within a society that celebrates pleasure and pain as a form of devotion. The narrative unfolds as Phedre, a trained spy and courtesan with the gift of Kushiel's Dart—an ability to find pleasure in suffering—takes on her new role as a noblewoman and protector of the realm. The book intricately weaves her personal growth and the political machinations of the court as she navigates alliances with powerful figures, including her beloved Delaunay and the enigmatic Melisande Shahrizai. Unlike its predecessor, "Kushiel's Chosen" introduces trials that test Phedre's loyalty and resolve, posing moral dilemmas that force her to balance her desires with her duties. One of the distinctive frameworks in "Kushiel's Chosen" is the exploration of "the divine and the profane," as Phedre's experiences deepen her understanding of desire and the complexities inherent in love and betrayal. Her journey is further complicated by external threats to her beloved land, namely from political adversaries seeking to upend the fragile stability of the realm. As Phedre grapples with her identity and purpose, the book delves into what it means to choose one's path in a world where fate seems predetermined, ultimately setting the stage for conflicts that challenge both personal and political loyalties.
