《Jingo》摘要

"Jingo" is a novel by Terry Pratchett, part of his celebrated Discworld series. Set in the bustling, satirical world of the city-state Ankh-Morpork, the story unfolds against the backdrop of rising tensions between Ankh-Morpork and the neighbouring kingdom of Klatch over a disputed piece of land known as "the island of Sator Square." The narrative explores themes of nationalism, war, and the absurdity of militarism through the lens of comedic satire. The protagonists include the patrician of Ankh-Morpork, Lord Vetinari, who operates with a blend of ruthless pragmatism and cunning, and Sam Vimes, the head of the City Watch. Vimes embodies common sense and deep-rooted skepticism towards authority and war, driving much of the story's conflict as he seeks to prevent an all-out war sparked by manipulative leaders and mob mentality. Another pivotal character, the watchman Carrot Ironfoundersson, brings a contrasting naive optimism and a strong sense of justice that adds depth to the narrative. Pratchett employs his trademark humor and clever wordplay while tackling serious issues such as racism and the folly of human conflict. The book also showcases the bureaucratic absurdities of war, illustrated through the preparation for battle and the endless rhetoric fed to the populace to fuel their fervor. Unique chapter titles reflect the escalating insanity around the onset of conflict, revealing the way misunderstanding and prejudice can escalate into full-blown warfare. Ultimately, "Jingo" serves as a sharp critique of society's inclination toward violence and the often ridiculous nature of international relations, wrapped in Pratchett's witty, whimsical prose.
