《It Ends with Us》摘要

Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel It Ends with Us follows Lily Bloom, a young woman who has moved to Boston to open a flower shop. The book is narrated by Lily in the present tense, interspersed with diary entries and letters she wrote as a teenager to Ellen DeGeneres, a framing device that recalls her first love, a homeless boy named Atlas Corrigan. In the present-day storyline, Lily meets Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon who is adamant about wanting only a casual relationship, and the two eventually marry. The novel’s central conflict emerges when Ryle’s behavior turns abusive, forcing Lily to confront a cycle of violence she recognizes from her own childhood, where her father abused her mother. A chance reunion with Atlas, now a successful restaurateur, complicates her decisions. Hoover has stated the story was inspired by her own mother’s experience with domestic abuse, and the title refers to Lily’s determination to end the pattern of violence rather than pass it on. The book is distinctive for its unflinching portrayal of the gradual escalation of intimate partner abuse and for its controversial ending, which Hoover has defended as realistic rather than romantic. It was a runaway bestseller, propelled by BookTok, and spawned a 2022 sequel, It Starts with Us, which continues Lily and Atlas’s relationship. The novel is classified as contemporary romance and new adult fiction, though its heavy themes have sparked debate about how it is marketed.
