Infinite Jest 요약

David Foster Wallace’s *Infinite Jest* is a sprawling, encyclopedic novel set primarily in a near-future North America reorganized as the Organization of North American Nations (O.N.A.N.). Its central MacGuffin is a film cartridge titled “Infinite Jest,” so entertaining that any viewer becomes catatonically engrossed and eventually dies. The plot orbits two main milieus: the Enfield Tennis Academy, run by the Incandenza family, and the Ennet House Drug and Alcohol Recovery House nearby in greater Boston. Protagonists include Hal Incandenza, a teenage tennis prodigy with a mysterious inability to communicate, and Don Gately, a recovering addict and Ennet House staffer. Distinctive frameworks include the novel’s 388 endnotes (some fictional, some digressive), its non-chronological “Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment” timeline under subsidized time, and the wheelchair-bound Quebecois separatists of Les Assassins des Fauteuils Rollents (the A.F.R.), who seek the lethal cartridge as a weapon. Wallace interweaves themes of addiction, entertainment, and recovery, with lengthy set pieces such as the Eschaton game at the tennis academy and Gately’s hospital reflections. The book’s structure, dense prose, and encyclopedic scope are as famous as its content. It was published in 1996 and is widely considered a landmark of postmodern American fiction.
