The narrative follows Kinbo, a tour guide who specializes in providing guided excursions in the city’s seedy nightlife, particularly the red-light district. Another notable element of the novel is its exploration of the interplay between culture and identity. Through the characters’ conversations, Murakami examines the cultural disconnect that often occurs between locals and foreigners, highlighting the misunderstandings that arise in a globalized world. The novel’s title refers to both a literal and metaphorical stew, symbolizing the mixture of experiences and emotions the characters engage with.
