《Hogfather》摘要

"Hogfather" is a fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, set in the fictional Discworld, specifically on the eve of the holiday Hogswatchnight. The story unfolds when the Hogfather, the Discworld equivalent of Santa Claus, mysteriously goes missing. The central premise revolves around the necessity of belief and how it shapes reality within Pratchett's satirical universe. As the Hogfather's absence threatens the very concept of Hogswatch, Death, who is portrayed as a skeletal figure with a surprisingly soft side, takes it upon himself to impersonate the jolly figure. This leads to a comedic, yet profound exploration of what it means to be human and the importance of myths, traditions, and belief systems. Key protagonists include Susan Sto Helit, Death's granddaughter, who is a strong-willed character often trying to reconcile her ancestry with her own human instincts. As she uncovers the plot behind the Hogfather's disappearance, Susan embarks on a quest that pits her against sinister forces that want to extinguish belief and joy. This narrative framework is interspersed with Pratchett's unique brand of humor and social commentary, examining themes of commercialism, childhood innocence, and the importance of stories. The novel also features a plethora of quirky characters and subplots, including assassins from the Guild and the concept of the Auditors, who embody cold rationality and seek to impose order on the chaotic world of the Disc. "Hogfather" stands out not only for its engaging plot but also for its incisive exploration of belief and imagination in society, making it a rich and thought-provoking addition to the Discworld series.
