ملخص Hidden Figures

"Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly brings to light the remarkable contributions of African American women mathematicians at NASA during the Space Race. The book is set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and the technological advancements of the 1960s, primarily focusing on the careers of three key protagonists: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. Shetterly meticulously details their individual journeys and the systemic barriers they faced due to their race and gender. The narrative framework is both biographical and historical, blending the personal lives of these women with the broader socio-political context of the era. The author uses a chronological approach, moving through pivotal moments in their careers, such as the launch of Project Mercury and the calculations necessary for John Glenn's orbital flight. Through these chapters, Shetterly highlights their incredible mathematical prowess and problem-solving skills, which were crucial to NASA's success. A central argument of "Hidden Figures" centers on the intersectionality of race and gender, illustrating how the women navigated and challenged the prejudiced structures of their workplace. The book also underscores themes of perseverance, resilience, and the importance of representation in STEM fields. By emphasizing the historical significance of their work, Shetterly not only honors the legacy of these women but also advocates for greater recognition of the often-overlooked figures in history who have contributed to monumental achievements. Ultimately, "Hidden Figures" serves as a powerful testament to the vital role that these women played, reshaping the narrative of American history and inspiring future generations to acknowledge and pursue the dreams previously thought unattainable.
