《Gideon the Ninth》摘要

"Gideon the Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir is a unique blend of science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, set in a universe where necromancy and political intrigue intertwine. The story revolves around Gideon Nav, a strong-willed and fiercely independent swordswoman who is reluctantly drawn into a deadly competition among the nine houses of necromancers. Set on a decaying and enigmatic imperial planet, the narrative unfolds in a world where each house is adept in the dark arts of necromancy, with varying philosophies and priorities that shape their powers. The novel’s framework involves an intriguing mix of humor and gothic elements, accompanied by a murder-mystery aesthetic as Gideon teams up with Harrowhark Nonagesimus, the powerful and enigmatic heir of the Ninth House. Harrow's quest for ascendance in the Emperor's service requires them to navigate a series of deadly trials on the remote planet, and their relationship evolves amid the tensions of survival and trust. Muir’s chapters are infused with rich world-building and intricate characterizations, exploring themes of loyalty, ambition, and the struggles against predetermined destinies. As Gideon and Harrow contend with not only external threats from rival necromancers but also the secrets that their houses hold, the novel delves deeply into their contrasting personalities—Gideon's brash confidence versus Harrow's introspective gravity. The blend of witty dialogue, dark humor, and a clever plot full of twists makes "Gideon the Ninth" a compelling read that challenges the conventions of both the fantasy genre and traditional narratives about friendships and rivalries in a world steeped in necromantic magic. Muir’s debut novel sets the stage for a captivating exploration of power, identity, and the fraught bonds that are formed in the face of existential threats.
