Resumen de Foundryside

"Foundryside," a novel by Robert Jackson Bennett, unfolds in the vibrant, decaying city of Tevanne, where magic and technology intertwine through the art of "scriving." This unique system allows individuals to inscribe commands onto objects, effectively imbuing them with abilities far beyond their natural limits. The story centers around Sancia Grado, a skilled thief with the remarkable ability to hear the voices of objects, which aids her in navigating a world steeped in political intrigue and corporate greed. The novel introduces readers to the oppressive house of the ruling merchant lords, particularly the powerful and ruthless house known as the Mandati. As Sancia attempts to pull off a high-stakes heist, she unexpectedly acquires a mysterious artifact that serves as a catalyst for her journey, drawing her into a conflict that threatens the delicate balance of power in Tevanne. Alongside her unlikely allies—including a sentient, enchanted golem named Clef—Sancia must wrestle with the implications of the scriving technology and the ethical dilemmas it poses. Bennett’s rich world-building integrates themes of autonomy, exploitation, and the murky line between innovation and oppression. Through captivating chapter arcs, Sancia grapples with her identity and the ramifications of her actions in a society where those in control harness scriving for nefarious ends. As she navigates friendships, ambushes, and betrayals, "Foundryside" explores not only the art of thievery but also the enduring struggle against an entrenched system that subjugates the many for the benefit of the few. This foundational work in Bennett's Divine Cities series engages readers with its imaginative premise and thought-provoking commentary on societal structures.
