『Foundation and Earth』要約

"Foundation and Earth," a novel by Isaac Asimov, continues the epic story of the Foundation series, expanding on themes introduced in earlier books. The novel is set in a far future where humanity has colonized countless planets across the galaxy. The narrative follows the protagonist, Golan Trevize, a former pilot and decision-maker of the Foundation, who embarks on a quest to find the mythical lost planet of Earth, the legendary birthplace of humanity. Alongside his companions—historian Janov Palver and robot R. G. G. "Bliss"—Trevize navigates a universe filled with complex political dynamics and philosophical dilemmas. Asimov utilizes distinctive frameworks, such as the concept of psychohistory, which analyzes the development of societies through mathematical equations, alongside the themes of memory, identity, and the search for origins. The novel is divided into distinct chapters that explore various planets and civilizations, each revealing their unique customs, technologies, and issues. Through their travels, Trevize and his friends engage in profound discussions about the implications of knowledge and the meaning of humanity in a technologically advanced age. The central argument revolves around Trevize's internal struggle to choose between utilizing the galactic empire that has emerged from the Foundation's successes and the possible existence of a more harmonious society in the historical Earth. While seeking Earth, the trio encounters different factions and powerful individuals, challenging their beliefs and the future of humanity. "Foundation and Earth" is not only a journey through space but also a philosophical exploration of what it means to be human, posing essential questions about our existence and future.
