Resumen de Dom Casmurro

"Dom Casmurro," written by the renowned Brazilian author Machado de Assis, is a seminal work that intricately explores themes of jealousy, memory, and unreliable narration. The novel is chiefly set in Rio de Janeiro during the late 19th century and presents a deeply personal account of the protagonist, Bento Santiago, who recounts his life, particularly his relationships and the emotional turmoil surrounding his marriage. The narrative unfolds through a fragmented and introspective lens, revealing Bento's obsession with his childhood friend, Capitu, and his unfounded suspicions regarding her fidelity. Machado de Assis employs a distinctive first-person narrative that invites readers into Bento's psyche, creating a complex interplay between perception and reality. The structure is marked by flashbacks and reflections, complicating the timeline and emphasizing the fluidity of memory. Each chapter offers insights into Bento's character, his insecurities, and the societal constraints of the Brazilian bourgeoisie, contrasting his inner tumult with the external world. The novel's central experiment lies in its exploration of whether absolute truth can be discerned through subjective experience. As Bento grapples with his mounting jealousy and feelings of betrayal, readers are left to question the reliability of his account and the nature of his relationship with Capitu. The narrative's ambiguity and rich symbolism—particularly associated with the enigmatic character of Capitu, often interpreted through her distinctive "eyes"—profoundly engage themes of love and mistrust. Overall, "Dom Casmurro" is a masterful exploration of human emotion and the complexities inherent in memory, making it a cornerstone of Brazilian literature and a vital study of the interplay between love, perception, and identity.
