ملخص Coffey's Hands

"Coffey's Hands" is a novella by Stephen King featured in his collection "Four Past Midnight." The story is set in a fictional death row facility in the late 20th century, primarily focusing on the interactions surrounding the enigmatic inmate John Coffey. Coffey possesses extraordinary abilities, particularly his power to heal, which sets the stage for a profound exploration of themes such as morality, justice, and the nature of good and evil. The novella frames its narrative through the perspective of Paul Edgecombe, a prison guard who has become disillusioned with the justice system. Throughout the story, Paul grapples with the ethical dilemmas posed by Coffey’s supernatural gifts, as well as the brutal realities of the death penalty and the individuals involved in the execution process. The framework of the novella contrasts the stark atmosphere of the prison with the ethereal and almost saintly presence of Coffey, creating a tension that drives the narrative. Key chapters explore the relationships between Paul, Coffey, and other characters on death row, revealing their backstories and the complexities of their lives before entering prison. The interactions between these characters serve to humanize the often dehumanizing environment of capital punishment. The story also delves into the impact of trauma and the capacity for healing, both physically and emotionally, as Coffey’s unique abilities raise questions about the morality of life and death decisions made by society. Through "Coffey's Hands," King masterfully weaves a narrative that examines deep moral questions while creating a compelling, character-driven story marked by a blend of realism and the supernatural. The novella stands as a poignant commentary on the human condition, reflecting on love, redemption, and the depths of despair.
