《Chomp》摘要

"Chomp" by Carl Hiaasen is a humorous middle-grade novel set in the lush, perilous landscape of the Florida Everglades. The story follows young Wahoo Dean, who assists his eccentric father, Mickey, an animal wrangler for a reality television show called "Expedition Survival!" As they struggle to keep their family’s animal reserve afloat amid various challenges, including a lack of financial stability and the eccentric personalities involved in the show, Wahoo’s life takes an unexpected turn when they collaborate with the show’s obnoxious host, Derek Badger. The novel explores themes of environmental conservation and the impact of reality television on public perceptions of wildlife. Wahoo's family wrestles with their ideals as they confront the bizarre scenarios and dangers that arise from filming the show. The setting of the Everglades serves as both a beautiful backdrop and a living character, highlighting the importance of protecting Florida's unique ecosystems. The novel features a cast of quirky characters, including Wahoo's daring friend, Tuna, who becomes embroiled in the chaotic adventure. As the filming progresses, various experiments unfold, showcasing the often absurd disparity between genuine wildlife care and the sensationalism of reality TV. Hiaasen uses humor and satire to critique the entertainment industry while simultaneously presenting an adventure filled with alligators, wild experiences, and unexpected friendships. "Chomp" effectively combines the thrills of adventure with poignant commentary on the intersection of media, nature, and ethics, making it a unique contribution to Hiaasen's body of work.
