《Check, Please! Book 1》摘要

"Check, Please! Book 1" by Ngozi Ukazu is a graphic novel that presents a heartwarming coming-of-age story centered around Eric "Bitty" Bittle, a bright and talented figure skater who joins a college hockey team. Set primarily at Samwell University, the narrative explores Bitty's adjustment to college life, including grappling with his identity as a gay athlete in a traditionally hyper-masculine sport. The book is structured into distinct chapters, each highlighting different aspects of Bitty's experiences—from his relationship with food (often chronicled through mouthwatering pie recipes he shares) to the ups and downs of team dynamics. One of the distinctive frameworks of "Check, Please! Book 1" is its integration of webcomic aesthetics and social media elements, which contribute to a lively and engaging atmosphere. Ukazu utilizes a format that blends character-driven storytelling with humor, heartfelt moments, and the challenges of navigating friendships and romances. The protagonist, Bitty, faces various experiments in self-acceptance and authenticity, challenged by the expectations of his teammates and the complexities of team camaraderie. As Bitty builds relationships with his teammates, particularly with Jack Zimmermann, the captain of the hockey team, the narrative delves into themes of support, vulnerability, and love. The colorful illustrations complement the text, enhancing both comedic and emotional moments. Throughout "Check, Please! Book 1," Ukazu effectively engages with issues of identity, acceptance, and the importance of community, making it a memorable exploration of life, love, and the pursuit of passion in a challenging environment.
