The story is centered around a teenage girl named steph, who grapples with the challenges of being a new high school student while trying to fit into a digital space that provides her with solace. Set against a backdrop of a social media platform called CatNet, where users share their love for cats, the narrative explores steph's journey of self-discovery amidst her connection with a mysterious user named “Catherine." The novel highlights themes of friendship, trust, and the consequences of anonymity in online interactions. Kritzer constructs a unique social environment within CatNet, portraying it as a safe haven for users to express themselves without judgment. As steph forms bonds with other members of the platform, including her friend, she becomes embroiled in a series of incidents that challenge her perceptions of reality and betrayal. The juxtaposition of virtual relationships and real-life implications is a key framework in the story, raising questions about authenticity and the motives behind online personas. Throughout "Catfishing on CatNet," Kritzer employs innovative narrative techniques to address relevant social issues, such as catfishing and the nuances of digital communication among adolescents. The book captures the tension between the comfort of online communities and the potential dangers that lurk within them, making it a poignant exploration of how technology influences modern friendships and personal identities. As tensions escalate, steph must confront not only the truths about those she trusts but also her own understanding of who she really is.
