《Carry On, Jeeves》摘要

"Carry On, Jeeves" is a collection of short stories by P. G. Wodehouse featuring the much-loved characters of Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet, Jeeves. Set primarily in early 20th-century England, the stories blend humor, social satire, and the absurdities of the idle rich. The book presents a series of predicaments that Bertie finds himself in, stemming from his interactions with friends and family, particularly his aunts and their various demands on his time and resources. The narrative framework of "Carry On, Jeeves" is distinct in its episodic nature, with each chapter focusing on different aspects of Bertie's life, from romantic entanglements to misunderstandings with his aristocratic circle. In these stories, Wodehouse showcases Bertie's endearing yet bumbling personality, juxtaposed against Jeeves' remarkable intellect and problem-solving abilities. The central dynamic between the two characters highlights the theme of class distinction, as Jeeves often rescues his master from social blunders and helps the well-meaning but scatterbrained Bertie navigate the complexities of upper-class society. Among the most notable stories in the collection is “Jeeves Takes Charge,” where the relationship between master and valet is established. Bertie’s attempts to retain his independence are comically thwarted by Jeeves’ superior knowledge and clever schemes. Other chapters explore various vexing situations, such as romantic misunderstandings and familial pressures, all while keeping the witty banter and intricate plotting that define Wodehouse’s style. Ultimately, "Carry On, Jeeves" serves as a delightful exploration of character interactions, societal norms, and the comedic misadventures that arise when one attempts to juggle both love and life’s expectations.
