《Broken Homes》摘要

In "Broken Homes," Ben Aaronovitch continues the adventures of Peter Grant, a probationary constable and apprentice wizard within the unique realm of London’s magical underbelly. Set against the backdrop of a modern-day London interwoven with folklore and magic, the novel explores themes of urban decay and the complexities of contemporary life. As Peter investigates a series of strange occurrences linked to a mysterious and neglected urban housing development, the narrative deftly blends elements of crime fiction, urban fantasy, and humor. The story begins with Peter and his colleagues from the Metropolitan Police’s magical division, including the enigmatic Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale and his fellow apprentice, the fiercely independent and skilled magician, Leslie May. The duo uncovers strange connections between their investigations and a sinister force manipulating the city’s infrastructure. Their journey leads them to confront a range of social issues, notably the impact of gentrification and the darker aspects of urban living. Aaronovitch's distinctive framework employs the concept of "magic-infused architecture," which he uses to explore how physical spaces in London influence both individuals and the magic that permeates the city. The prose is rich in London vernacular and is filled with quirky characters, including a delightful mix of supernatural beings. With fascinating chapter arcs that intertwine plotlines involving architecture, historic sites, and the supernatural, "Broken Homes" examines not only the literal structures of the city but also the emotional and societal layers embedded within them. As the narrative unfolds, readers are treated to a blend of investigative suspense and magical elements, creating a captivating exploration of a city where the mundane often intersects with the extraordinary.
