《Brief Lives》摘要

"Brief Lives," the seventh volume of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed comic book series "The Sandman," continues the exploration of the Endless, a family of anthropomorphic archetypes personifying universal concepts. In this edition, the narrative primarily revolves around Dream, also known as Morpheus, who embarks on a quest to locate his missing sibling, Destruction, who has abandoned his duties and chosen to live among humans. This quest leads Dream through various realms and encounters, weaving a rich tapestry of myth, folklore, and human experience. Set against a backdrop that shifts from the ethereal Dreaming to the mundane world of human lives, "Brief Lives" delves deep into themes of existence, duty, and the complexity of relationships. The artistic collaboration between Gaiman and illustrators such as Jill Thompson adds a visually striking dimension that complements the narrative's emotional depth. Each chapter introduces unique characters from various mythologies and histories, illustrating the interconnectedness of their lives with those of the Endless. The story is structured around Dream’s interactions with other entities, including his sister Death and the mortal family of an artist, which highlights the transient nature of life and the impact of the Endless on human destinies. Notably, Gaiman’s commentary on freedom versus responsibility elevates the narrative, questioning the implications of choice and the consequences of one's actions. "Brief Lives" not only serves as a continuation of the overarching saga but also stands alone as a poignant reflection on identity, loss, and the fleeting nature of existence, inviting readers to ponder the meaning of life and the stories we leave behind.
