"Big Trouble" by Dave Barry is a comic novel that intricately weaves together multiple storylines set in a chaotic Miami during the late 1990s. The narrative kicks off when a group of characters, including an unwitting hitman, a troubled teenage boy, and a pair of bumbling criminals, become entangled in a series of hilarious misunderstandings involving a suitcase bomb and a large sum of money. The book showcases Barry’s signature humor style, characterized by absurd situations and satirical observations about human nature. The protagonists include the recently divorced and hapless Arthur Herk, who navigates the comedic trials of his life as he deals with his estranged family and a misadventure involving a rival, a local crime lord named the "Hood," who seeks to assert control over the city. Other notable characters include the resourceful Ellen, Arthur's ex-wife, and a motley crew of eclectic personalities, like an eccentric arms dealer and a boy obsessed with a superhero comic book. Each chapter delves into the eccentricities and peculiarities of these characters, often leading to chaotic convergences. "Big Trouble" effectively employs a slapstick humor framework, crafting a whimsical but intricate plot that emphasizes the unpredictable nature of luck, fate, and the American crime experience. Barry draws upon the cultural environment of Miami to reflect on the clash of different lifestyles, creating a vivid tapestry of interactions colored by both tension and hilarity. The blending of crime, family dynamics, and socio-political commentary allows Barry to explore deeper themes of chaos and redemption, all while ensuring the narrative remains fast-paced and entertaining.
