Саммари «Big Little Lies»

Liane Moriarty’s novel Big Little Lies unfolds in the affluent Australian beachside community of Pirriwee, where three women become entangled after meeting at the school gates on their children’s first day of kindergarten. Madeline Mackenzie, a blunt, witty mother of three, befriends Celeste Wright, a former lawyer living in apparent luxury with her wealthy husband Perry, and Jane Chapman, a young single mother new to town whose son Ziggy is accused of biting a classmate. That accusation, denied by Ziggy, sets off a feud with another mother, Renata Klein, and divides the parent body. Moriarty structures the book around two alternating tracks: the escalating social conflict among the Pirriwee parents, and a police investigation presented through interview transcripts with witnesses, teachers, and neighbors. These interviews reveal that a death occurred at the school’s trivia night fundraiser, but the identity of the victim is withheld until the end, making the novel both a domestic drama and a slow-burning mystery. The narrative also develops Celeste’s secret: her marriage to Perry is marked by domestic violence, which she conceals behind the family’s wealthy, glamorous image. Jane, meanwhile, guards her own private history involving Ziggy’s conception. The novel’s central concerns include motherhood, female friendship, bullying among both children and adults, the tension between public appearance and private reality, and the way class and money shape social standing in a small community. Big Little Lies was published in 2014 and later adapted into a widely watched HBO television series starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley. Told with Moriarty’s characteristic blend of humor and suspense, the book examines how secrets and lies accumulate beneath the surface of ordinary suburban life.
