Before We Were Yours 요약

"Before We Were Yours" by Lisa Wingate intertwines the harrowing history of the Tennessee Children's Home Society's adoption scandal in the 1930s with a contemporary narrative. The novel alternates between the perspective of Rill Foss, a young girl who is taken from her family and placed in the corrupt orphanage, and Avery Stafford, a modern-day attorney with her own familial connections to the past. The dual timeline expertly explores themes of family, loss, and the search for identity, revealing how the lives of Rill and her siblings are forever altered by systemic injustices. Set against the backdrop of the American South, the novel paints a vivid picture of life along the Mississippi River, capturing both the beauty and the stark realities of the era. Rill, fiercely protective of her younger siblings, navigates the challenges of being in a chaotic and abusive environment, where children are deemed commodities. Wingate uses Rill's story to highlight the emotional turmoil faced by those who were forcibly separated from their families, shedding light on the often-overlooked trauma of adoption during this period. In Avery's narrative, Wingate examines the complexities of privilege and the weight of family legacy, as Avery grapples with her own responsibilities and connections to the past. The interplay between the two narratives builds suspense, as Avery begins to uncover buried secrets that challenge her understanding of her family's history. Through rich character development and a meticulously researched setting, "Before We Were Yours" not only educates readers about this dark chapter in American history but also prompts profound reflections on the meaning of home and the bonds that tie us to one another.
