《Beauty》摘要

"Beauty," written by Robin McKinley, is a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." The novel follows the story of a young woman named Beauty, who is not only characterized by her unconventional looks but also her kind heart and inner strength. Set in a mythical world reminiscent of medieval Europe, the story explores themes of love, sacrifice, and self-discovery. In this version, Beauty's family—her father, a merchant, and her three siblings—struggles with their daily lives after losing their fortune. Beauty’s character development is central to the narrative, as she grapples with her self-image and the expectations placed upon her. The story’s framework revolves around Beauty's relationship with the Beast, whose magical castle represents both a place of confinement and transformation. Beauty's journey explores the nature of true beauty and the significance of looking beyond appearances. McKinley does not shy away from providing a rich backstory of the Beast, diving into his curse and the loneliness he endures. The chapters are structured to reveal the evolving dynamics between Beauty and the Beast as they confront their fears and prejudices. Elements of magic, such as enchanted objects and spells, serve to deepen the fairy tale atmosphere, while nuances of familial loyalty and personal choice underscore the complexity of their relationship. Through vivid descriptions and engaging dialogue, McKinley crafts a tale that examines what it means to love someone beyond their exterior, ultimately merging fantasy with profound emotional exploration. "Beauty" stands out as a thoughtful homage to the original fairy tale, inviting readers to reflect on societal standards of beauty and the transformative power of love.
