Sally Rooney’s third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You, follows four Irish friends in their late twenties and early thirties: Alice, a celebrated novelist who has retreated to a rented house near the coastal town of Enniscorthy; Felix, a warehouse worker she meets through a dating app; Eileen, her best friend and an editorial assistant at a Dublin literary magazine; and Simon, a religiously observant parliamentary adviser Eileen has loved since adolescence. The book alternates between present-tense third-person chapters depicting their daily lives and intimate, intellectually charged emails exchanged between Alice and Eileen, in which they debate beauty, capitalism, climate anxiety, fame, sex, friendship, and whether the novel as a form can survive late capitalism. Rooney pairs this structure with long, unpunctuated stretches of dialogue and close attention to ordinary bodily and domestic detail, a style she developed in Conversations with Friends and Normal People. The title, taken from a Friedrich Schiller poem set by Franz Schubert, signals the novel’s central tension: its characters long for transcendent beauty and meaning while feeling stranded in a world of precarious work, digital communication, and political despair. The setup follows Alice and Eileen navigating new and rekindled relationships—Alice with Felix, Eileen with Simon—while the novel asks whether intimate love can coexist with global crisis. Rooney has described the book as an attempt to write about desire and friendship without irony. It was published in September 2021 by Faber & Faber in the UK and Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the US, and was longlisted for the 2022 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
