《Atlas Shrugged (Centennial Ed. HC)》摘要

"Atlas Shrugged (Centennial Ed. HC)" by Ayn Rand is a monumental work that delves into the philosophical underpinnings of individualism and capitalism, embodying Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. Set in a dystopian future where the government exerts increasingly oppressive control over the economy and individual achievements, the novel explores the consequences of collectivism and the moral implications of self-sacrifice. The narrative follows several key protagonists, including Dagny Taggart, a determined railroad executive; Hank Rearden, a steel magnate who invents a revolutionary metal; and John Galt, a mysterious figure who embodies Rand's ideal of the rational individual. As these characters grapple with a world that punishes success and rewards mediocrity, they face the philosophical dilemma of whether to continue contributing to a society that undermines their values. Throughout the book, readers encounter pivotal experiments in the form of striking industrialists, known as “the men of the mind,” who choose to "shrug" off a society that demands their talents without reward. The plot unfolds across the United States, showcasing a society on the brink of collapse due to economic decline, with Rand using a series of thought-provoking monologues to articulate her arguments against collectivism and for laissez-faire capitalism. Major themes include the role of the individual in society, the virtue of selfishness as a moral principle, and the necessity of reason and freedom for human flourishing. "Atlas Shrugged" ultimately challenges readers to consider the implications of their beliefs on personal responsibility and societal structure, elevating its status as a pivotal philosophical novel.
