《Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?》摘要

In "Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?", renowned primatologist Frans de Waal challenges the traditional notions of intelligence and cognitive abilities in non-human animals. He explores the boundaries of animal intelligence by examining various species, from dolphins and elephants to ravens and primates, and posits that our understanding of intelligence has been largely anthropocentric. De Waal argues that intelligence should not be exclusively defined through human measures and encourages readers to appreciate the diverse cognitive skills present in the animal kingdom. Through a series of compelling examples from observational studies and experimental research, De Waal illustrates complex behaviors exhibited by animals that challenge conventional definitions of intelligence. He discusses problem-solving abilities, social interactions, empathy, and even moral decision-making in species like chimpanzees, which serve as a reflection of intelligent behavior. In this context, he emphasizes the importance of a comparative approach, urging for a reevaluation of how we assess intelligence across species. The book is structured around several key themes that include the evolutionary origins of intelligence, the roles of environment and social structures in cognitive development, and the limits of human understanding when it comes to animal minds. De Waal also examines historical biases that have shaped our perception of animal intelligence, advocating for a more inclusive view that recognizes the richness of animal cognition. Overall, "Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?" not only deepens our understanding of animal behavior but also prompts a philosophical inquiry about the nature of intelligence itself, urging readers to reconsider the cognitive capabilities of their non-human counterparts.
