《Apples Never Fall》摘要

Liane Moriarty’s novel Apples Never Fall centers on the Delaney family, longtime proprietors of a suburban Sydney tennis academy, whose four adult children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—grew up steeped in the competitive junior-tennis circuit their parents, Stan and Joy, built their lives around. The story begins when a wounded young woman named Savannah appears on the Delaneys’ doorstep one night, and Joy, recently retired and restless, takes her in. Not long afterward, Joy vanishes, and the narrative shifts between the months leading up to her disappearance and the present-day investigation, with the siblings forced to reconsider their parents’ marriage and their own rivalries. Tennis functions throughout as both backdrop and organizing metaphor: the Delaneys speak in the language of matches, rankings, and mental toughness, and Moriarty uses the sport’s blend of solitary pressure and partnership—especially in mixed doubles, which Stan and Joy once played—to frame questions about loyalty, ambition, and what people hide from those closest to them. The novel also probes sibling dynamics and the legacy of a marriage in which one partner’s needs went unexamined. The book was published in 2021 and became a New York Times bestseller; it was later adapted into a television series. Moriarty, an Australian author known for Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers, again blends domestic drama with a mystery structure, withholding information about Joy’s fate while alternating among the four children’s perspectives and flashbacks to Savannah’s arrival. The setup turns on an unsettling question: why would a stranger’s presence precede a matriarch’s disappearance, and what do her grown children actually know about the woman who raised them?
