Set in New York City during the early 1980s, the story centers on two high school girls, Liza and Annie, who meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and form an immediate, deep connection. The narrative is framed around Liza's reflections as she recounts their relationship and the challenges they face as they navigate their feelings for one another within a society that is often unaccepting of LGBTQ+ identities. Garden skillfully interweaves themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery throughout the chapters. The protagonists, Liza and Annie, are portrayed with depth as they explore their burgeoning romance in contrast to the expectations and norms dictated by their families and peers. The setting plays a pivotal role, with iconic New York locales providing a backdrop of both inspiration and tension, as the characters’ experiences occur against the vibrant yet sometimes harsh realities of urban life during that era. A significant aspect of the book is its emphasis on the importance of spoken and unspoken communication in relationships. Liza and Annie embark on emotional and intellectual experiments, testing the limits of their feelings and the societal constraints surrounding them. As their friendship deepens into a romantic relationship, the narrative addresses issues such as acceptance, the pressure of societal norms, and the joy of discovering one's true self.
