《All Things Wise and Wonderful (All Creatures Great and Small #5-6)》摘要

"All Things Wise and Wonderful" is the third volume in James Herriot’s beloved series, encompassing the fifth and sixth installments of "All Creatures Great and Small." This semi-autobiographical work continues to reflect Herriot's experiences as a rural veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales during the mid-20th century. The book adopts a series of interconnected anecdotes that illustrate the challenges and joys of veterinary practice while also portraying the vibrant local community and its deep-seated love for animals. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Yorkshire countryside, Herriot shares a collection of heartwarming and humorous tales that emphasize the bond between humans and animals. The narrative celebrates the quirks of both animals and their owners, showcasing memorable characters, such as the often comically obstinate farmer, Mr. Farnon, and the endearing, occasionally unpredictable creatures that come under Herriot's care. Throughout the book, Herriot reflects on the emotional highs and lows of his vocation, including moments of triumph in surgery and poignant instances of loss. One recurring framework is the contrast between the idealism of young veterinarians and the stark realities of veterinary work, emphasizing themes of empathy, responsibility, and the unpredictability of life. Herriot's storytelling captures the spirit of his youth and the wisdom gained through experience, underscoring the lessons learned in both veterinary medicine and life in general. With its intimate insights into the veterinary profession intertwined with rich descriptions of rural life, "All Things Wise and Wonderful" engages readers in heartfelt reflections that resonate with anyone who has loved an animal or appreciated the beauty of nature. This book solidifies Herriot's legacy as one of the foremost storytellers of the human-animal relationship.
