《Abhorsen》摘要

"Abhorsen" by Garth Nix is the third installment in the Old Kingdom series, following the events of "Sabriel" and "Lirael." This fantasy novel further explores the unique and intricate world of necromancy and the responsibilities of the Abhorsen, a powerful necromancer tasked with ensuring the dead remain properly laid to rest. The story is set in a fictional realm where the Old Kingdom lies in conflict with the Charter of the Living, governed by magical forces and an ancient system of Free Magic and Charter Magic. The narrative follows the protagonist, Lirael, who has taken on the mantle of Abhorsen and faces the daunting challenges associated with her new role. She is joined by her loyal companion, the Disreputable Dog, and they embark on a perilous journey to confront the rising threat of Ancelstierre, a powerful and malevolent force that seeks to disrupt the balance of life and death. The chapters weave through themes of duty, identity, and the significance of knowledge in a world where the boundaries between life and death are fluid. Nix's storytelling employs a rich framework of lore, deepening the reader's understanding of the Abhorsen's instruments, such as the bells used to control the dead. The contrast between the living world and the realm of the dead is vividly painted through meticulous world-building.
