However, her life takes a turn when she finds herself enamored with the charismatic and wealthy Dr. Gerald. The story unfolds as Sarah navigates her feelings while grappling with the social disparities between her humble background and Gerald’s affluent lifestyle. Neels intricately explores Sarah’s inner conflicts regarding her infatuation, showcasing her loyalty and emotional turmoil. The framework of the novel reveals not only the challenges Sarah faces in voicing her feelings but also the societal expectations and barriers that often dictate romantic relationships, particularly in the context of the 1970s when the novel was published. Chapters alternate between Sarah's daily routines in the hospital and her reflections on her burgeoning feelings for Gerald, providing readers with a blend of personal and professional happenings that shape her character.
